A fuse within me catches flame.
It burns and fizzes, throws its sparks.
As it grows shorter, closes in
To detonate my heart and mind
And spread my shrapnel ’cross the world,
Which folks make into effigies
To bury with their kin and pets.
I lived these lovely decades few
And died a million lives and am
Remembered by a billion more.
I rest, immortal as the earth
In which forever I’m entombed.
